Sunday Slaylist: Sonisphere 2012 – What Might’ve Been

April 1st, 2012

Queen Brian May Adam Lambert CANCELLED Thrash Hits

There’s not denying it – for UK rock fans, the cancellation of Sonisphere 2012 was the biggest news story this week. Unless something incredibly dramatic happens later this year, we’d put good money on it being one of – if not the – biggest news story of the entire year. It’s because it’s such a momentous news event that we’re dedicating this week’s Sunday Slaylist to the acts that were supposed to be performing at Knebworth this Summer…only with an extra little twist….

Download Festival 2011: The Darkness @ Main Stage – Friday, 10 June 2011

The Darkness 2011 Thrash Hits band promo photo

The Darkness: They came. They conquered. They split up. They returned. They pwned Donington. Plus, Justin Hawkins clearly stole our “Give us a ‘D’; Give us an ‘ownload'” to open up their set. The fact that The Darkness had pyro in daylight hours only made us wonder how his moustache escaped going up in flames.

So, you know The Darkness reformed and that they’re playing at Download Festival 2011 and that this is bloody exciting. What would be the best Darkness reunion-related thing ever? Seeing their hometown comeback show with 500 other people. Yep. Thrash Hits went to Norwich and saw one of the biggest British rock bands of the past decade strut their stuff in East Anglia. Guess how amazing it was.

Despite all the rumours about The Darkness being set to reunite to be second on the bill to Def Leppard at Download Festival 2011, festival booker Andy Copping has said that they won’t be. We may have been totally right about Leppard headlining but we still live in hope.

It’s interesting that when the same rumours circulated last summer, Justin Hawkins popped his head out to tell everyone it wasn’t true. He hasn’t done that this year. Hmmm. We still want The Darkness to return.

Sometimes people like to whisper in our ears and sometimes we are just better at the internet than other people. This all leads to us hearing about stuff way before we’re meant to. That’s how we got the scoops on Metallica and Linkin Park headlining Sonisphere Festival 2009 as well as when AC/DC self-confirmed Download Festival 2010.

This time, a little whisper found its way into our stupid heads about Def Leppard and The Darkness co-headlining Download Festival 2011. There’s a tiny little more to it than just a silly rumour though. It just depends on how hard you look…

‘Tiny when erect’. ‘I’m retarded’. ‘Giant ballbag’. ‘A euphemism for tits’. These are not the nicknames for the writers at Thrash Hits (well, not this week anyway) but song titles from the debut record from Oaf. If that does not get you interested, what will get your attention is the music. No matter how diverse your tastes, you have not heard the like of Botheration before.

How much idle conjecture has there been over Chinese Democracy? Axl Rose has had 17 years to turn this vanity project into absolute gold. It has to be a masterpiece. It has to be the best album of the 21st century.

I say “vanity project” because Rose is the only founding member remaining in Guns N’ Roses. I say “vanity project” because he has taken 17 bloody years to write one album!
