It is very hard to escape the influence of Slaughter of the Soul. At The Gates’ classic still stands as the consensus pinnacle of the melodeath genre, and remains a touchstone of much of modern metal. So it’s probably best to establish from the off that At War with Reality –  arguably the most anticipated comeback album since Carcass’ Surgical Steel – is not a clone of its predecessor.

Gone But Not Forgotten 2012 Thrash Hits

With the year beginning to draw to a close, and with only a bare handful os Sundays left for 2012 Slaylists, this week we’re turning out attention to those we’ve lost in 2012. We’re talking about the bands that have either broken up or gone on hiatus, as well as the more serious subject of musicians who sadly died at some point over the last 12 months.

The Thrash Hits Podcast 010: Bloodstock Open Air 2012 REVIEWED

August 20th, 2012

Thrash Hits Podcast 1

With Bloodstock Open Air 2012 now over, Hugh Platt and Tom Dare have reconvened in the studio to look back at the highs and lows of Thrash Hits’ Bloodstock experience this year – talking about our high and lows, the winners and losers, and just what Tom was doing with a Hairy Helmet and an Old Growler on the Friday night.

We also took time out to see what nonsense MegaDave has been spouting this week, to discuss Peter Dolving’s revelations about what really went on with his split from The Haunted earlier this year, as well as a check-up on the situation with Baroness, who suffered a truly awful bus crash last week. Get well soon, guys.

Has Peter Dolving announced he’s quitting The Haunted….via Facebook?

To answer our own, rather ambiguously-worded rhetorical question in our blog-post’s title – it seems so. The Haunted vocalist appears to have unequivocally confirmed his departure from the band to the rest of the world via a sternly-worded post on his personal Facebook page. And going by what’s he’s saying, it’s not what you could really call an “amicable split”.

Album: Witchery – Witchkrieg

Given the pedigree of the band’s members, and given the fact that this is their fifth record over the last twelve years, it is perhaps surprising that Witchery are not better known than they are. After all, if you are comprised of current or former members of The Haunted, Arch Enemy, Merciful Fate and Opeth, you might expect a tad more attention than they’ve received thus far.

Photos + Live: All That Remains / The Haunted @ London Islington Academy – 24 January 2009

January 27th, 2009

All That Remains Press Photo Thrash Hits

London has lacked metal this January the way it’s lacked sunshine. The endlessly grey and pigshit-miserable drizzle was matched by a gig calendar bereft any head-banging, horn-throwing metal action. Which is why the Islington Academy tonight is packed tighter than a nun’s naughty bits for the first true heavy hitters the capital’s seen in 2009. The foul weather alone wasn’t about to stop a legion of grizzly metalheads from packing out this North London concrete shoebox.

2008 into 2009: Anterior

December 12th, 2008

Welsh metallers, Anterior might be named after a cruciate ligament but that doesn’t matter to us. Hairy frontman, Luke Davies talks about burning vans, fisting whole insurance companies and Tom Jones singing Slipknot covers…

What was your highlight of 2008?
There was quite a few highlights but if I was tied down to my favourite it was probably playing with Children of Bodom on their small UK tour – huge venues with huge great crowds. It was a great few days.

What’s the worst thing that happened to you in 2008?
We had a pretty savage tour van fire this summer, which was quite bad. The van was completely torched, and me and Steve (guitarist) were trapped in the back whilst the front was a pure raging inferno! [Read more →]
