Yeah, it’s that tour. The one the US had last year and we were all really jealous about. Oh well. We got it too. Mastodon and The Dillinger Escape Plan released the Thrash Hits Album of the Year of 2011 and 2010 respectively. Red Fang released an album last year but it went largely unnoticed. Shit happens. The good news is that we went to Brixton (and Manchester) to see this tour. Is that good news? It is. It definitely is.

Six things we learnt when we saw Mastodon/TDEP/Red Fang at Brixton

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again – as far as touring line-ups go, the combination of Mastodon, The Dillinger Escape Plan and Red Fang has set the bar for 2012. Given that Mastodon put out the Thrash Hits Album of 2011, The Dillinger Escape Plan put out the Thrash Hits album of 2010, and Red Fang are one of our favourite up’n’coming crushers, it’s gonna take one heck of a tour to top this.

That’s not a rhetorical question we’re posing up there in the blog title. Having just watched Mastodon’s latest video – this time for ‘Dry Bone Valley’, the third single off of their superb fifth studio album, The Hunter – we can’t help but think that the Mastodon boys might’ve blown the entire video budget for this album with the tits’n’trips antics of the ‘Curl of the Burl’ video.

I may have just spoilt the incredible fun of reading my list. Anyway… the other nine albums on this list are wicked as well. Buy them all.

Live: Mastodon on Later… with Jools Holland @ BBC – 18 October 2011

Ok, so it’s not really a proper Mastodon gig but nevertheless you’d be barking mad to turn down seeing them play songs off The Hunter for the first time on these shores. Whilst many rock artists have had the privilege of being invited on this prestigious show, the world of metal has often been criminally ignored. Of course we had to head down and represent. Get in, Jools Holland!
