As I’m sure a lot of you out there were pretty bummed out earlier this year when The Mars Volta called it a day. While they never reached any kind of consistency or accessibility through their 12-year lifespan, they were always able to produce jaw-dropping moments, and the first two full-lengths are still utterly astonishing pieces of music. It’s with extremely apt timing, then, that Brighton trio The Physics House Band bring out their debut EP, Horizons / Rapture, as this couldn’t sound anymore like The Mars Volta if the cover was wearing an afro wig.

Gone But Not Forgotten 2012 Thrash Hits

With the year beginning to draw to a close, and with only a bare handful os Sundays left for 2012 Slaylists, this week we’re turning out attention to those we’ve lost in 2012. We’re talking about the bands that have either broken up or gone on hiatus, as well as the more serious subject of musicians who sadly died at some point over the last 12 months.

It’s not as if the point of a record review is ever to exact a reaction out of the artist itself, but this review would probably make Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala a happy couple. Why? Because this record from The Mars Volta is such an utter disappointment – which is what they accepted it might be, because they are true artistes who do it for the art, right maaaan?

Pick up a glass of wine and the latest New Scientist – there’s an idea that the act of thinking isn’t just the brain working independently. Your body is more than just ropes and levers, or sensory extensions to your mind – it is your mind, all of those experiences threaded and integrated together – as physical as the brain itself.

Anyone who saw last year’s Blood Into Wine documentary, which followed the trials of a certain “rockstar” grape grower in Arizona, might see echoes of this in Sensualism. It’s a favourite philosophy of Eric Glomski – business partner of and mentor to budding winemaker Maynard James Keenan;  who you may remember as frontman of Tool and A Perfect Circle, as well as conceptual head of Puscifer.

Is there anything better than a Thrash Hits Festival Splash Page? Yeah, loads of things but you won’t find the best online festival coverage on any of them. You’ll find that right here.

All our work from Sonisphere Festival 2011 is going be linked to from this page (eventually), so give it a bookmark or just don’t close it, because it’s all you’re going to need. Individual band coverage (interviews, photos, setlists and some tiny reviews), rumours, drinking games, stage times, dodgy photos of as many sexy ladies in various states of safe-for-work undress as we can legitimately get away with? It’s all here.
