Megadeth MegaDave Dave Mustaine 05 June 2013 Manchester Academy by Gary Wolstenholme Thrash Hits

MEGADAVE. We’ll never get tired of calling Dave Mustaine that. No matter how many stupid things he says off stage, no matter how many awful new Megadeth albums called Super Collider that he puts out, and no matter how many onstage temper tantrums he throws because he’s unhappy with the stage lighting, no matter how many homophobic slurs he wants to throw at people who’ve paid money to go watch him play live – despite all of that, he’ll still always be MegaDave.

So, “nu-thrash” is dead then? It seems so and not before time really – as a notorious grump and long-time thrasher myself, the majority of the latter-day neon-and-bandanas “party thrash” contingent got right on my norks. More of a pastiche that missed pretty much the entire point of the genre rather than a valid movement, it won’t be terribly missed around here. This won’t affect Huddersfield’s Evile much with them being cut from an altogether more authentic cloth, with Skull marking their fourth album in six years.

Photos: Kreator + Evile @ Manchester Ritz – 27 April 2013

Kreator at Manchester Ritz 27 April 2013 by Gary Wolstenholme Thrash Hits

Y’know how people are always failing to get the pun in the name ‘Thrash Hits’? It happens all the time. You’d think after five long years of doing this, people would’ve caught on to the fact that it’s a play on words on Smash Hits, and a recognition that we (in part) try to channel their simultaneous irreverence and love for their subject matter, albeit from a metal perspective. And that we’re not exclusively a website about thrash metal.

Sometimes though, you have to give the idiots what they want, which is why we’re publishing theses photos by ace snapper Gary Wolstenholme of Kreator’s recent UK tour. Sure, we’re a month late. They fell down the back of the digital sofa, what with our relaunch and all. Anyway, hush your bellyaching and go look at his shots of Kreator, Evile and Xentrix playing live in Manchester.

Evile and playing a free charity gig next week. Go along and donate and thrash out and what have you.

Thoe UK leading thrash revivalists, Evile, are playing a charity show in London down at the Old Blue Last on Tuesday next week. It’s free entry, but since it’s a charity show, they’ll be taking donations on the door for the British Lung Foundation. That seems entirely reasonable to us – after all, what kind of prick goes to a free charity show and moans about making a donation on the door? That’s right, no-one, that’s who.

Top 6: Diamond Plate on Edible Tour Necessities

March 27th, 2012

Diamond Plate promo photo Thrash Hits

Do you know how ideas become clichés? It’s because at some point, people far and wide found them to carry enough recognisable truth that they became hackneyed concepts. Do you know why American bands always used to rag on how bad food in the UK is? That’s because it was – and indeed, in some places, still is – uniformly awful. Which is why when we asked the guys in Diamond Plate to give us a Top 6 during their recent run of shows here in the UK, all they could think about was the sneaky tricks they’ve learnt when it comes to making cheap tour grub that can sustain them when they’re on the road.

(As an aside, thanks to this interview, we found out that orange squash apparently doesn’t exist in the USA? How can that be true? Ridiculous).

Bloodstock Open Air 2012 adds Testament as a UK exclusive.

February 15th, 2012

Bloodstock Open Air have confirmed that Testament – one of the most criminally-overlooked thrash bands, in our opinion – will be playing their only UK show of 2012 as part of the Bloodstock bill. And while we’ve lightly mocked some of the “UK EXCLUSIVE!!11!!” claims thrown around by festivals with this year’s bookings, bagging sole possession of Testament is definitely a big win in Bloodstock’s favour.

Alterno-crossover bands swarm over metal like herpes over Tommy Lee’s genitals. In fact, the genre has become so riddled with tributary offshoots and bastardised spawn that it’s often easy to forget the birthing wails of metal; the riffs given by Black Sabbath, the vocal acrobatics of Led Zeppelin and how the generation of bands thereafter – Priest, Maiden, Metallica – moulded an undeniably fierce, dark beast (born of its predecessors) that remained the archetype for so long. However ‘purist’ metal bands of late have looked tired and uncertain of this brave new world. Savage Messiah and their latest release, Plague of Conscience, look ready to smash this trend.

Future Hits 102: Angist

November 3rd, 2011

angist iceland death thrash metal band paris thrash hits

Angist
From: Reykjavík, Iceland
Lazy equation: (Arch Enemy + more death metal) x Iceland
URL: Facebook // Twitter

Thrash Hits Verdict:
This is what we said about Angist when we saw them on the final night of Iceland Airwaves 2011.

This is Angist. It’s dark, thrashy, black metal and it’s bloody brilliant. You will struggle not to headbang to their music. Their major selling point, however, is always going to be their singer. Edda is one of the most terrifying people I’ve ever seen on a stage. Obviously, she was absolutely lovely offstage but she commands her stage incredibly well.
