SEVENTEEN albums. Overkill have to be the most constant and consistent thrash band by absolutely frigging miles. Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth and DD Verni have been the only vocalist and bassist they’ve ever had in all that time, too. There must be some sort of prize out there for this kind of longevity.

Bad Band Photos 009: Generation Kill

August 22nd, 2013

New York City thrashers, Generation Kill featuring Rob Dukes of Exodus have just signed a worldwide record deal with the mighty metallers at Nuclear Blast, so they sent out a press release along with a photo of the band. So far, so normal…

Generation Kill
From: New York City, USA
Actually from: That annoying bit of Photoshopsville where you can’t quite colourmatch the faces
Age: Old. Too old for this shit, anyway
LOL factor: 4/6 – you won’t notice at first glance, but when you do…

SLAYER: Trve Kvlt legends or Hipster’s choice?

God Listens To Slayer Thrash Hits

It’s a curious phenomenon. Slayer are unparalleled in their support. Not only are they the metaller’s metal band but they’ve also captured the attention of people who possibly weren’t even born when Reign In Blood was released.

The thrash legends are back in the UK this weekend, headlining Bloodstock Festival 2013. Last May they performed at Alexandra Palace as part of All Tomorrow’s Parties’ I’ll Be Your Mirror event. While Bloodstock Open Air is the preserve of the staunchest metal community in the world, ATP events tend to draw those in who are one step ahead of the madding crowd.

Megadeth MegaDave Dave Mustaine 05 June 2013 Manchester Academy by Gary Wolstenholme Thrash Hits

MEGADAVE. We’ll never get tired of calling Dave Mustaine that. No matter how many stupid things he says off stage, no matter how many awful new Megadeth albums called Super Collider that he puts out, and no matter how many onstage temper tantrums he throws because he’s unhappy with the stage lighting, no matter how many homophobic slurs he wants to throw at people who’ve paid money to go watch him play live – despite all of that, he’ll still always be MegaDave.

It was just in April that Invisible Oranges announced that re-thrash is dead. It was a big statement seeing as the thrash revival has thrown up such names as Municipal Waste and Havoc in its time as the gumby’s best friend. While it’s certainly accurate to point at Entombed-core being the metalhead’s most favourable mode of headbanging these days, that guy clearly hadn’t heard Manifest Decimation, the debut album from Power Trip.

So, “nu-thrash” is dead then? It seems so and not before time really – as a notorious grump and long-time thrasher myself, the majority of the latter-day neon-and-bandanas “party thrash” contingent got right on my norks. More of a pastiche that missed pretty much the entire point of the genre rather than a valid movement, it won’t be terribly missed around here. This won’t affect Huddersfield’s Evile much with them being cut from an altogether more authentic cloth, with Skull marking their fourth album in six years.

Photos: Kreator + Evile @ Manchester Ritz – 27 April 2013

Kreator at Manchester Ritz 27 April 2013 by Gary Wolstenholme Thrash Hits

Y’know how people are always failing to get the pun in the name ‘Thrash Hits’? It happens all the time. You’d think after five long years of doing this, people would’ve caught on to the fact that it’s a play on words on Smash Hits, and a recognition that we (in part) try to channel their simultaneous irreverence and love for their subject matter, albeit from a metal perspective. And that we’re not exclusively a website about thrash metal.

Sometimes though, you have to give the idiots what they want, which is why we’re publishing theses photos by ace snapper Gary Wolstenholme of Kreator’s recent UK tour. Sure, we’re a month late. They fell down the back of the digital sofa, what with our relaunch and all. Anyway, hush your bellyaching and go look at his shots of Kreator, Evile and Xentrix playing live in Manchester.
