The Ukraine’s black metal underground is so underground that one of its leading bands, Drudkh, has a “no photos, no interviews, no website, no gigs” policy, and then streams their latest EP on Bandcamp. Awesome right? But it goes deeper – this EP isn’t just Drudkh covering lesser-known bands from the Ukranian scene (Hefeystos, Unclean, Sacrilegium) but also inviting the very English folk/black metallers Winterfylleth to contribute a cover of Hateforest’s ‘The Gates’ to conclude this four song split EP.

Criticising bands for not releasing any decent albums in 20 years was cool ten years ago, but these days some metal fans accept that pioneers and left-over bands from certain scenes are just “classic”. The shift to reliance on live revenue suits bands like Slayer and Deicide just fine. Why innovate when your fans demand the early 80s and 90s?

by Tom Gibbons

I gave Winds of Plague an absolute pasting in my review of their last album, 2011’s Against The World, with my criticisms revolving (mainly) around its lazy writing, tedious breakdowns, Johnny Plague’s testosterone-fuelled lyrics, and sub-par production quality. With that in mind, it’s with extreme trepidation that I plugged in their new album Resistance.

Interview: “They also cut out a live snake’s heart and ate it while it was still beating” – The Ocean on tour in Asia

The Ocean 2013 promo photo Thrash Hits

Back in April, The Ocean released their latest concept album, Pelagial, and pretty much ever since they’ve been off all over the world tour. We sent Tom Gibbons down to check out the Hong Kong show of the Asian leg of their world tour last month, and got him to sit down with The Ocean guitarist Robin Staps afterwards for a Tsing Tao and a chat.

The Ocean have had a bit of a tumultuous year. Fresh from taking part in the Summer Slaughter tour (where they butted heads with Sumerian Records boss and tour founder, Ash Avildsen), they’ve carried on with their world tour. Our man out East, Tom Gibbons, caught them when they swung by his manor in Hong Kong.

6 things we learned watching The Ocean in Hong Kong…

With a tracklisting practically reading as a Best Of…, spanning all the way from 2000’s The Art of Self Defence through to last year’s De Vermis Mysteriis, High On Fire’s latest double-live album Spitting Fire Live serves both as a no-brainer purchase for fans, as well as a great (and way overdue) introduction for newcomers to the Oakland trio. Tracked over a pair of shows in December 2012, the Spitting Fire Live Vol 1 & 2  recordings were passed on to Greg Wilkinson and Converge’s Kurt Ballou for mixing, and offer a raw, no-frills playback of High On Fire’s stage performance.

Everyone knows what makes(made?) Megadeth awesome, and after a career spanning 30 years you’d think Dave Mustaine would know how to put down a great album based around these strengths. However, MegaDave’s 14th album, Super Collider – released on his own label after parting with Roadrunner Records – is at best a painfully boring hard rock record, and at worst an altogether embarrassing experience.

On paper, Flyleaf are a massive success. The Texans have owned huge swathes of the American charts for years, and toured with some of your favorite bands. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out why – their formula is a surefire winner. Imagine if Nickelback matador Chad Kroeger impregnated Avril Levigne multiple times, and Avril then gave birth to an angry Brady Bunch. It’s this formidable blueprint the has carried Flyleaf all the way to album number three – New Horizons.

Last year’s The One EP earned C.R.O.W.N a debut album release with Candlelight Records, and the French duo continue their formula of doomy stoner-droner with Psychurgy. The album acts as an extension of the EP in every aspect – albeit with a more sophisticated final mix that adds extra atmosphere and even more weight to the low-end crushing passages.

Live: Fucked Up, Gallows, + Fanzui Xiangfa @ Hong Kong Hidden Agenda – 07 March 2013

Fucked Up promo photo 300px Thrash Hits

So it’d be fair to say that Thrash Hits isn’t just a fairly UK-centric kind of website most of the time, but also a fairly London-centric UK-centric kind of website a damn near awful lot of the time. Huh. We figured we ought to do something about that. Which is why we called upon our man out in the far east, Tom Gibbons, to venture out to catch Fucked UpGallows, and Beijing-based Fanzui Xiangfa when they rolled into Hong Kong. Yes, Hong Kong in the People’s Republic of China.

Six things we learnt watching punk rock in Hong Kong:
