Nine Inch Nails live at Reading Thrash Hits

If you’re a Nine Inch Nails fan, chances are you’re pretty damn excited for the UK leg of the band’s European tour that kicks off later this week. Whatever you think of Reznor’s music, that’s a mighty damn impressive state of a affairs for a man who makes some of the darkest music on the planet.

While we could take a peek at what songs they’ve been playing around Europe, there’s something to be said about keeping yourself in the dark about a band’s setlist, which is why we asked fellow NIN fan Daniel Cairns to put together a little preview piece for us in the form of…

Sunday Slaylist: The return of Nine Inch Nails

Trent Reznor Nine Inch Nails 2013 Thrash Hits

We’re not sure why so many people were surprised when Trent Reznor announced at the start of the week that Nine Inch Nails would be going back out on the road to play some shows over the next two years. Reznor has always said that Nine Inch Nails would return, and it’s been four long years since the band last played together – a return to the music that is Reznor down to his blood-and-bones seems natural at this point.

Last week we talked to the Andrew W.K. about taking the piss out of guys who stutter, crying at films and cutting his own arm off. None of that was weird at all but this time, at a time when they’re in the middle of filming The Dark Knight Rises, we talk about Anne Hathaway’s intense face, the virtues of Twitter over Facebook and Andrew’s aversion to Los Angeles. CRAZY TALK!

We’re a big fan of London nu-nu-grungers, Japanese Voyeurs. When they played our show in January, they covered Nine Inch Nails classic, ‘Closer’. They have also recorded it. Sadly, we reckon the Oscar-winning pile of awesome that is Trent Reznor won’t let JVs release it. Luckily, we’ve got our hands on it, so you can listen to it.

With few exceptions, remix albums are the domain of the die-hard fan and are only ever appreciated in comparison to the original release. In this example, here we have a remix album of the career-ending fanfare that was Ministry‘s The Last Sucker, the George W. Bush-themed album Al Jourgensen had intended to abandon the Ministry name with two years ago.

So this was it: Nine Inch Nails’ final live hurrah in the United Kingdom. While the sun slowly set behind stage left, thousands of Reznor devotees held their breath and silently prayed that after twenty years of Nine Inch Nails, this final UK performance at Knebworth wasn’t about to mark their idol’s career as heading in that same dramatic direction.

Get there early enough and you’ll be able to catch live sets from The Xcerts, Save Your Breath and Flood of Red. Get their later, and you get to see Thrash Hits staffers collapse at the bar following an excess of beers. Double trouble! And just a fiver to boot.

Nine Inch Nails supremo, Trent Reznor, has been getting up to more than just his usual activities of brooding in dark rooms and plotting how he’s planning on fucking with the music industry next. He’s been re-affirming that he’s a man of good taste by putting the boot in to the latest solo album from former Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman, Chris Cornell.
