Reading Festival 2013 in review (+ some photos)

Reading Festival is a great festival. We go every year. We get drunk and we see as many bands as is feasibly, possibly doable. Occasionally, we remain lucid enough to actually take note of what’s going on around us and it’s at those moments that we made mental notes that we forget.

Anyhow, here are some things that happened that we’re going to talk about. Some of it is directly about bands but some of it might seem like constructive criticism that we should probably send straight to the promoter for him to ignore completely. We prefer it when you ignore us completely, so here goes.

Why does Ginger Wildheart care so much about Kerrang!?

July 30th, 2013

hey hello Victoria Liedtke Ginger Wildheart promo photo wildhearts 2013 kerrang

Sunday evening saw Ginger from The Wildhearts get to #1 in the UK Rock Charts with his new band, Hey! Hello!. That’s a pretty big deal but instead of celebrating his success, the ever-outspoken Ginger chose to take to Twitter to berate Kerrang! for not featuring his band, even going so far as to call for James McMahon’s resignation as editor of the magazine.

It stems from an apparent rejection from the magazine but descends into trolling at best; bullying at worst. At the heart of the issue is a man who loves a brand but hates what he thinks they’ve become. Kerrang!, whether it likes or believes it, covers music for a younger demographic than it used to and youth is always sneered at and looked down upon. Without that, teenage angst wouldn’t exist and neither, probably, would Kerrang!. Hey! Hello! (who are now added to the list of annoying names when writing a Word document that automatically capitalises the first letter after a punctuation mark) feel that the magazine should change to fit them in.

Interview: Greg Puciato of The Dillinger Escape Plan emails us

May 28th, 2013

The Dillinger Escape Plan 2013 band promo photo Thrash Hits

This was meant to be a phone interview with The Dillinger Escape Plan but Greg Puciato didn’t manage to make the connection – that is what we assume to be the connection problems – so we’ve had to do this via email. There appears to have been a bit of a sense of humour transplant with the first question, but this is an email interview and Greg is an interesting man so it’s still ok. We know first-hand that he doesn’t mind spouting nonsense face-to-face, so it’s cool. To be fair, we could’ve put more effort into writing down more intriguing or incisive questions, but then Greg could’ve put more effort into picking up the phone. SO IT’S COOL. NO PROBLEM HERE. OK.

“What is Metal?”, by Dale Butler from Malefice

Dale Butler from Malefice Thrash Hits

Earlier this year, we were minding our own business over on Twitter when we notice Dale Butler from Malefice kicking up a rage over the attitudes of certain quarters of the UK metal scene. Never ones to turn down the opportunity for some good ol’ fashioned shit-stirring, we dropped Dale an email and asked him whether he fancied writing about what had got him so angry with a few more words than 140 characters would allow. Take it away, Dale….

Brutality Will Prevail promo photo Thrash Hits

Samuel Breen to Raziq Rauf:

“Hey Raz,
I’m thinking about going to Brutality Will Prevail tonight in Manchester. Would you like a review? Guess it’s up Thrash Hits street.
xoxo”

Raziq Rauf to Samuel Breen

“hey Sam
that’s funny because I literally just finished reviewing the London show for Metal Hammer this minute! yes I’d love a review. check out Harm’s Way as well – they are excellent.
razx”

Apart from Raziq’s impressive refusal to start sentences with an upper case character, you may notice how ignorant/casj (delete as appropriate) I was, WRT Brutality Will Prevail. Having now seen them live I’m ashamed of such apathy.

@samuelbreen: @raziqrauf …I couldn’t be more confused
@raziqrauf: @samuelbreen: Can not wait for this review.

It’s worth noting how bewildered I was throughout the whole gig. Something which came to a head during Harm’s Way. In fear that I was having a breakdown, I left half way through their set.

Six things I discovered when Brutality Will Prevail came to Manchester:

MOVIE TIP: Andrew W.K. on Westerns, the new Batman, Facebook vs Twitter & Los Angeles

andrew wk i get wet album cover nosebleed thrash hits

Last week we talked to the Andrew W.K. about taking the piss out of guys who stutter, crying at films and cutting his own arm off. None of that was weird at all but this time, at a time when they’re in the middle of filming The Dark Knight Rises, we talk about Anne Hathaway’s intense face, the virtues of Twitter over Facebook and Andrew’s aversion to Los Angeles. CRAZY TALK!

Smashing Pumpkins bassists just can’t seem to stay out of the news

Nicole Fiorentino bassist Billy Corgan Smashing Pumpkins live onstage thrash hits

After last week’s bizarro news about original Smashing Pumpkins bassist and former sexy thing, D’Arcy Wretzky ending up in gaol for letting her ponies go rampaging around town, this week sees current Pumpkins bassist and still very lovely, Nicole Fiorentino revealing to Billy Corgan that she was actually one of the little girls on the cover of Siamese Dream. SAY WHAT??
