The British underground is doing some incredible things right now. With small labels like Church Of Fuck getting a hold of bands like Trudger, Old Skin and Esoteric Youth, dirty, doomed music has a home for a long, long time. The aforementioned Trudger aren’t an entirely new proposition – they released an EP two years ago – but they’ve taken their sweet time in order to create Dormiveglia and sure enough, that time was well spent. Dormiveglia (an Italian word for being half asleep, or half awake) takes elements of sludge, hardcore and post-metal and melds them into a coherent, expressive and intense debut full length.

Camden Town smells. In the sunshine, it often smells very bad indeed. On Bank Holiday Weekends, it often smells even worse than usual, thanks to all the spilled cider and puddles of drying vomit. smelled something when he caught Of Mice & Men’s headline show there just before Easter, but was it the smell of success, or just the pong of stale hype?

Six things we learned while watching Of Mice & Men in London…

If you remember Winnebago Deal from the first time around (they formed in 1999, toured with everyone from Blood Brothers to Mondo Generator and had the spirit of punk rock etched into their veins while still picking up major plaudits) then chances are you won’t need telling how brilliant they were, and now continue to be. If, after a four year absence, this review merely serves to give you a heads up that the barnstorming duo are back then you are welcome. Enjoy – shit’s as good as it ever was.

EP: Drudkh/Winterfylleth – Thousands of Moons Ago/The Gates

The Ukraine’s black metal underground is so underground that one of its leading bands, Drudkh, has a “no photos, no interviews, no website, no gigs” policy, and then streams their latest EP on Bandcamp. Awesome right? But it goes deeper – this EP isn’t just Drudkh covering lesser-known bands from the Ukranian scene (Hefeystos, Unclean, Sacrilegium) but also inviting the very English folk/black metallers Winterfylleth to contribute a cover of Hateforest’s ‘The Gates’ to conclude this four song split EP.

2013 AOTY Thrash Hits Albums of the Year

If you’re on this page, you really should have seen the Thrash Hits Albums of the Year 2013 list already. If you haven’t, you should click that link or this link and sort that out. This piece will attempt to delve into some vague statistical analysis of the results. This is really only interesting if you care deeply about either the Thrash Hits Top 20, any old statistical analysis or both, so the chances are you’ll have clicked through to something else by now. Anyway…

Vans Warped Tour UK @ London Alexandra Palace – 16-17 November 2013

November 27th, 2013

After he returned from his weekend at the UK’s version of Warped Tour, Gavin Lloyd requested special dispensation to write a 1400-word missive on his experience at Ally Pally with a few thousand other grebos. If you’re an emo, feel free to call this longform journalism. If you’re not… go and read a real website.

As a teenager I spent many summers flicking through music magazines in awe of the Warped Tour. It was always a dream of mine to head over to the States and take in this travelling punk rock circus in person. Alas, I never actually got to go and I watched as the Warped Tour evolved into something of a mismatched monster. While they’d still invite the likes of The Bouncing Souls along out of what I guess is a sense of respect, things were different. The internet gave birth to ‘crunkcore’ bands being booked and isanyoneup.com getting stalls in the merch village. Still, it’s not all bad, Katy Perry played one year. With that in mind, I welcomed the fact that Warped now comes to the UK’s shores and headed along to Alexandra Palace to check it out, obviously disappointed Katy Perry wasn’t present.

Zebrahead and the art of advertising “self-love” aids: Adam Graham from FACT is our man in Japan

October 15th, 2013

Here’s the second column from Adam Graham – the “token white guy” (his words, not ours) in Japanese mosh heroes, FACT. For content, our man in Japan is still banking on Japan being weirder than what you’re used to. It appears to be working. We’re hopeful of plenty more too…

Japan’s a funny old country. I don’t mean this in a sneering, xenophobic, “Oh, look at the silly foreigners,” kind of way – I am extremely fortunate to live here and enjoy the hospitality of the country and its people. What I mean is that from a completely objective standpoint a lot of things go down here that seem to teeter on the edge of sanity.

I’m talking Pepsi-flavoured Cheetos and nightmare-inducing “cute” mascots (can you guess what this fella is selling?!). Oh and hey, you’re worried about a little bit of horsemeat finding its way into your hamburger? What about if it found its way into your ice cream? ON PURPOSE.
