New Zealand’s Beastwars are sadly under-appreciated outside of their own country. Everyone we know who has heard their gutsy mix of sludge and stoner metal has converted The band have just had both of their very fine albums – 2011’s self-titled debut, and last year’s even-better Blood Becomes Fire – re-issued on some rather swanky coloured vinyl, which was enough of an excuse for us to make our man Rob McAuslan have a little chat with their drummer, Nathan Hickey (aka Nato), about the ins and outs of watching the opportunities to tour your album all over the world slip away one illegal album torrent at a time.

We first wrote about Yards almost a year ago and we wrote that about six months after we realised they were well good. Yes, you might think that we like to keep things from you but we actually really like telling you about our favourite new sounds. With two members from two of our favourite bands (The Ghost of a Thousand and Astrohenge), it is not surprising that we like Yards. The good news is that the Brighton/London hardcore quartet have released their second EP and it’s called EP2.

Wolves Like Us are absolutely one of our favourite bands to have come out of Norway over the past few years. We loved their 2011 album, Late Love very much and along with Kvelertak and Blood Command, the Oslo quartet have shown us where the excellent heavy music is coming from. We’re very pleased to be debuting the video to their brand new song, ‘Get Gone’.

After his last column on why he dislikes guests lists so much proved to be so popular, we asked former Bastions drummer, Daniel Garrod, if there was anything else he fancied getting off his chest/putting in the firing line. We didn’t expect him to turn his attention to Record Store Day, but hey, here’s his column…
Two years ago, almost to the day, I got a call from my then-guitarist who sounded like he was going to stab me in the throat…

We like The Armed. We like them a lot. We like how they give away free, lossless digital versions of all their music just because they want to. We love that they do this so their music can be unrestrained by anything even slightly approaching commercial concerns. We love that they sound like the angriest bits of The Dillinger Escape Plan roaring bitter fury at a tornado. We like The Armed so much that we bought extra copies of the sexy 7-inch vinyl version of their latest EP, Spreading Joy, for the express purpose of giving them away to YOU.

Last weekend Kerouac played their final show ever. It was one of the best shows we can remember going to. We told you as much when we reviewed it. Now, statistically you probably weren’t there, but you can still make sure you show your appreciation for one of the best bands that’s broken up this year by buying their entire discography on sweet, sexy vinyl.
