“The ugliest band is the world is back!” screams the sticker on the front of Aura Noir’s latest, Out To Die. Seems a little mean. Agressor and chums may not be gracing the cover of Men’s Health any time soon, but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen some dudes in folk bands who are far more facially unfortunate.

Album: Azaghal – Nemesis

Who likes fairly standard, Northern European black metal? Yes? Good. You’ll like Azaghal’s Nemesis. It’s a box ticker. It’s got spiky, memorable riffs that almost push into melodic territory, harsh as fuck vocals, blasting, if not hyperspeed, drumming and that familiar sense of evil that all BM albums need. Anything else? No, not really. But do you, black metal fan, need anything else?

Germany’s Desaster have been pumping out albums of none more true black thrash for over twenty years, They’ve probably gone through several fields of cows worth of leather, enough bullet belts to feed a mini gun for a week and enough spikes to make…something big…really spiky. So, does The Arts Of Destruction find them in a more intospective part of their career? Are they blending electro and world influence into their sound? Have they changed at all? F*ck no.

Album: Hellsaw – Trist

Trist

From the off, I fully expected this to be a solid, yet not particularly exciting, fairly standard black metal album. I based this on the fact that Hellsaw have produced a few standard black metal albums, and judging by the corpsepaint, album art and song titles, this is no massive departure. I expected a beans-on-toast album. I like beans on toast, it’s good. But I’d never order it at a restaurant.

Live: Carpathia + Bleeding Oath @ London Camden The Unicorn – 27 January 2012

February 6th, 2012

A couple of Friday nights ago, we demolished every character-staining suspicion that we were having a “Sober January” in the Unicorn in Camden. There were also a couple of bands playing – Carpathia and Bleeding Oath – so we got our man Von to write about them.

Six things we learned while trying to get our noggins round this noodling prog metal extravaganza

Eshewing the recent trend in modern metal to be as technical as possible, Dyscarnate put their faith in big, brutal riffing and complex, but never wanky, drum work. That isn’t to say they pound out drop-D, one-note, bore-you-to-tears crap-fests – far from it. You don’t need a degree in guitar wank to enjoy this album. What you will need, however, is a neck, because I guarantee you’ll be nodding along, if not full-on windmill headbanging to at least one track.

Confession time. I only just started really listening to Goatwhore. Yeah, I’d heard them on compilation CDs and Spotify trawls, but I hadn’t sat down and got through a whole album. Why? Because I’m a fucking moron. Goatwhore are pretty much everything I like about metal. Each album is a great big spiky ball of black, blasting, power that makes me want to throw booze down myself, burn churches to the ground and wear nothing but bullet belts. I want to go back in time and smack myself in the face for being so dumb.
