Album: The Wretched End – Ominous

September 20th, 2010

The Wretched End
Ominous
Nocturnal Art Productions / Candlelight Records
25 October 2010

by Tom Dare

You may not have heard of The Wretched End, but the chances are you know one of the guitarists. After all, Tomas Haugen – better known as Samoth – played in one of the finest metal bands of all time for their brief but superlative career. Yet the former Emperor guitarist does not seem content to disappear quietly into the night. On this evidence it looks like he is determined to continue tearing up your ears for years to come.

Destruction
The Curse of the Antichrist – Live In Agony
AFM Records
25 September 2009

By Stephen Milnes

The live album is a curious beast. Many can feel rather soulless and synthetic, a poor imitation of actually being at a gig. Hearing the crowd over the top can be irritating, the tracks – often taken from across a plethora of albums – don’t always run together like a coherent album should, and the sets are often too long to be palatable outside the context of the performance, taking up multiple CDs. Put simply, they’re nerdy and usually the preserve of the super-fan.

Future Hits 038: Warpath

July 6th, 2009

The pureblood thrash of Warpath has already won them the top spot of Terrorizer Magazine‘s latest annual readers’ poll. That’s a mark of a band destined for Future Hits right there – and vocalist/rhythm guitarist Richard Goss, and lead guitarist Pete Hawthorne, both agree.

Thrash Hits verdict: Warpath don’t give two tugs of a dead dog’s cock about fad-thrash, ironic nostalgia, or most of the people of Swansea. What they do care about are all the things that made thrash great in the first place – riffs so fast they blur at the edges, snarling vocals that seethe with raw aggression, and the righteous banging of heads.

What was your highlight of 2008?
Definitely releasing the new Unearth record, The March. Playing Russia and Wacken Fest with Iron Maiden was pretty bitchin! Ozzfest with Kingdom of Sorrow was amazing too! Been a great year for me.

What’s the worst thing that happened to you in 2008?
Honestly, I’m thinking that doing dead lifts, backstage before a show in Danville, Virginia and pulling my back out four days before the end of tour was the worst thing that happened. It was four of the longest days of my life, but I pushed through the shows and made it happen.

December 8th, 2008

Nick Hipa play guitars in literarily-leaning Californian metalcore merchants, As I Lay Dying. Half of his stuff is stuck in Thailand. If we were him, we would have stayed there and guarded it. At some Full Moon Parties or something.
