So, Wet Nuns have announced that they’re splitting up. As they gleefully posted on their Facebook page, “our four year long joke isn’t very funny anymore. We’re sick of the sight of each other and the band is imminently to cease to exist.” Fair enough. For a band who’ve spent nearly half of a decade arsing around, this hardly seems like an incongruous end. Rest in peace, Wet Nuns. Remain in obscuria.

Live: Turbowolf, Black Moth + Wet Nuns @ London Highbury Garage – 10 October 2012

Turbowolf promo photo 2011 by Tom Bronowski Thrash Hits

We don’t write about every tiny band in the world in a hope to one day claiming that we wrote about them first. Take a look at our Future Hits section if you want proof. We DID however tip Turbowolf, Black Moth AND Wet Nuns, though. They played a gig together in London so of course we sent David Keevill down to watch them whilst feeling unnecessarily smug to ourselves.

Six things we learnt from Future Hits alumni in Highbury:

Converse Represent 100 Club Overkill Thrash Hits

When financial pressures and rising rent costs threatened to close London’s infamous (an yes, it’s one of the few venues that probably deserves such an epithet) 100 Club, Converse trainers stepped in with their chequebook to make sure the venue kept its doors open. This Summer, Converse also presented a series of curated nights at the venue, under the banner of ‘Converse Represent’. When it got to the heaviest of the shows – headlined by none other than Overkill – we sent that skinny punk beanpole, Tom Doyle, down to see what was what.

Six things we learnt when we sent Tom Doyle to Converse Represent at the 100 Club:

Wet Nuns combo live at Liverpool Sound City c/o Matt Thomas Thrash Hits

Liverpool Sound City is what happens when a load of people get together and decide to host a 3-day music/tech conference in the North of England. Basically – it’s what The Great Escape is to the South, and what In The City used to be for Manchester. It’s pretty damn sweet.

When we heard that one of our previous Future Hits subjects, the sleazily, diesel-powered heay blues duo that is Wet Nuns, were one of the bands playing over the weekend, we shouted at our Liverpool-based snapper, Matt Thomas, to go snap us some photos.

Thrash Hits Verdict: We admit to being shallow individuals at times. We’re far more likely to click a link to a band that someone suggests to us if said band have an awesome name. Similarly, we’re far more likely to click away from said band with an awesome name if they turn out to be rubbish. Wet Nuns are not rubbish. They describe themselves as an “undead two piece power-death-blues-punk band who makes middle-of-the-road dad rock songs about mainly women or death, or women AND death”. They are in fact, the filthy, sleazy, whiskey-soaked duo of guitarist, Rob Graham and drummer, Alexis Gotts, and they make music that makes us want to get in bar fights in the vain hope that it might impress hot girls with tattoos.
