There’s not denying it – for UK rock fans, the cancellation of Sonisphere 2012 was the biggest news story this week. Unless something incredibly dramatic happens later this year, we’d put good money on it being one of – if not the – biggest news story of the entire year. It’s because it’s such a momentous news event that we’re dedicating this week’s Sunday Slaylist to the acts that were supposed to be performing at Knebworth this Summer…only with an extra little twist….

Proving that heavy metal still has much further to go than it thinks in shedding its chauvinistic image, Epica have for some odd reason been clumped under that dreadful “female-fronted metal” definition. It’s a label so meaningless it geta applied to everyone from Nightwish to Arch Enemy. And it’s stopped Epica for getting credit as widely as they should for quite how distinct they are.

The problem with advocating the world of gleefully camp and over-the-top metal that many in the UK struggle to take seriously is that, in truth, much of it is borderline-unlistenable crap. It’s exceptionally difficult to do well, and the number of genuine stand-out records is rather low as a result. And while Leaves’ Eyes haven’t quite managed to deliver one of the latter, fourth album Meredead is still refreshingly enjoyable.
