Tech-Fest 2013 Thrash Hits

Earlier this week, the folks over in charge of Tech-Fest 2013 made their first line-up announcement – and they weren’t messing about. 25 bands, including all three major headline acts, were all covered in the first batch of names. That’s the kind of festival announcement we can get behind, and the kind that we’re making the subject of this week’s Sunday Spotify Slaylist.

Is Wintersun’s new album the most important metal release of 2012?

November 26th, 2012

Thrash Hits’ resident Euro metal geek Tom Dare is having great fun with the long, long, long-awaited second album from Finnish widdlers Wintersun. But he thinks it’s much more than that – he thinks it’s a landmark.

When Wintersun announced back in 2006 that work  composing album number two was underway, hopes were high. But as the years rolled by, Time seemingly joined the likes of Chinese Democracy and the mythical third Necrophagist record in the “when hell freezes over”-stakes when it came to a realistic ETA, fears increased. “Were they polishing a turd?”, we wondered. Had they been far too ambitious for their own good? So what a shock it was when Time I finally arrived, not just seriously good, but as one of the most important metal releases of its generation. It’s that time of the year again. No we don’t mean turning the heating back on – we are talking about Candlefest, the annual showcases organised by those awesome chaps over at Candlelight Records. by Tom Dare

Second albums can be a tense time, but when the second album raises the standards significantly, hones what the debut did so distinctively from a rough sketch to the full glorious multicoloured picture – as Xerath have with II – the effect is instant. It’s taken me several weeks to calm down enough and stop shouting “FUCK YES!” so I can tell you about how brilliant this is. [Read more →]

Live: Candlefest @ Camden Underworld – Saturday, 20 November 2010

November 23rd, 2010

When Xerath and Winterfylleth came to London, Tom Dare went down to give himself a thorough bangover. We expect him out of traction next week.

While the temptation to be marginally cynical about a record label showcase event is almost too much to pass up, the bill tonight is rather tasty – particularly so given that that talent on display is an all-British affair. Isn’t Britain just supposed to sigh and moan about how America and Europe has all the best bands, and how they never come here? It looks like we may finally be able to stop whingeing into our real ales – w’d be fools not to see for ourselves that this is simply no longer the case. [Read more →]

Xerath 2011 alt promo photo Thrash Hits

Hello there! My name’s Rich! You may know me as the guy that shouts at people from stage in my rock’n’roll band Xerath. You most certainly won’t know me as the drummer/singer/guitarist/bassist/synthist/primary song writer/band leader/genius in my other band Primer. In 99% of cases, you probably wont know me at all.

I’m here to offer and opinion or two, an observation here and there, and more than likely a completely unresearched and biased opinion on stuff that I give a shit about.
