August 11th, 2014

There are over 200 artists performing at Reading Festival. Assuming you’re not one of those pricks that goes to a festival just to see the headliners, that’s a hell of a lot of bands you don’t (yet) give a shit about to trawl through in the hope of finding your new love. Plus, you’ve got a job, pubs exist and you don’t even have a tent yet, so time is in short supply. That’s why we exist. We’re here to make sure that you don’t settle on wandering around in a field, blindly hoping to stumble upon greatness but settling on Deaf Havana or, even worse… Mallory Knox. Here are our top tips. Some are new bands and others are just great. Also, there are 12.

WATCH: Jacob Bannon of Converge documentary by Noisey/Vice

January 23rd, 2013

Converge 2012 promo photo Thrash Hits

The famously non-reflective Jacob Bannon is seen here in extra-reflective mood. Soundtracked by strings, long moments of Bannon staring into the camera and absolutely no extraneous fun, this 12-minute documentary from Noisey – Vice’s music channel – focuses on Bannon’s formative years and it’s actually great. It’s the kind of film that wins awards because instead of being puerile and silly, it deals with “emotions” and “feelings” and other things that morons put in quote marks when they’re being puerile and silly.

So in the best tradition of Sunday Slaylists, this week we’re running a special birthday tribute to the man often described as “the third most important member of Metallica”. Yep.

YouTube LOL: Heavy Metal Busking

June 25th, 2012

youtube logo lol thrash hits

You can break buskers in London down into approximately four distinct groups. You’ve got the slightly down-on-their-luck violinist/classical music buskers, you’ve got the really-crap-sub-Ocean-Colour-Scene-guitarists-covering-The-Beatles types, you’ve got those guys playing frickin’ panpipes, and you’ve got those guys playing saxophones over a backing track so complex, you wonder whether they’re just miming themselves.

What you don’t get so often is angry young men barking a capella heavy metal songs. And we’re not talking about clean-vocal stuff, either.

So what does everyone think of ‘No Reflection’ – the new single from Marilyn Manson?

March 8th, 2012

Marilyn Manson No Reflection Born Villain Thrash Hits

The new single by Marilyn Manson, ‘No Reflection’, the first full track anyone (apart from those in the former king of shock-rockers’ inner circle) has heard from the band’s forthcoming eighth studio album, Born Villain. It debuted on LA radio station KROQ yesterday, so of course a radio-rip has already found its way online. Check it out after the jump – though you better be quick, as it’s bound to get taken down before long. **UPDATE** Cooking Vinyl, the distributor through which Manson’s new, self-owned label, Hell, etc, operates, have now posted an official stream of the song now.

Interview: Cerebral Bore on finding inspiration from everything from funny farts to good burgers

February 24th, 2012

Cerebral Bore 2012 promo photo Thrash Hits

Last week you’ll have no doubt read us urging you to go check out ‘Horrendous Acts of Iniquity’, the brand new track from three-quarters-Scottish-one-quarter-Dutch gore-minded upstarts, Cerebral Bore. And if you read any of the words that were alongside the bowel-threateningly aggressive death metal, you’ll know that this isn’t a cut off a forthcoming album or even an EP, but as a single. A single? Yes, and a non-album single at that. People still do those, apparently.

We figured this was more than enough of an excuse to catch up with the band’s guitarist/manager, Paul Mcguire, to find out not only why they’ve done this, but to grill him on everything else that’s been going on and is about to kick off over in the world of Cerebral Bore.

Last week, Scottish-based gore-minded death metallers, Cerebral Bore, went into the studio to record a new single. Not a new album, mind you – just a new single – in order to try out a few new ideas in preparation for their next album, whichthey’re planning on recording later in 2012. What really caught our attention, however, is how Cerebral Bore have chose to premier this new track – ‘Horrendous Acts of Iniquity’ – on their unsuspecting fanbase.

Noisey Steve Ignorant Crass YouTube Thrash Hits

Another day, another YouTube channel demanding your attention, right? Well, no, in this case – Noisey, the Vice Magazine online-offshoot that’s entirely music-orientated – launched their own YouTube channel this week, and it’s already got a hell of a lot more going for it than a million other YouTube music channels where people endlessly interview rock stars about any old nonsense they thought up in the five minutes before they switched their camera on.
