Download Festival 2012: Black Label Society @ Main Stage – Sunday, 10 June 2012

Zakk Wylde Black Label Society Download 2012 Thrash Hits

Zakk Wylde came out wearing a Native American head-dress, and the Black Label Society stage banner featured lots of Chinese dragons. We’re not sure what the mixed message we’re getting here is supposed to be, but we figured it was best to let it lie and to let Black Label Society get on with the business of bombarding us with pinch harmonics. You’ve read the title? Right. That’s the gist of the story. Black Sabbath will no longer be performing any of their previously announced European tour dates, with the exception of Download Festival 2012. In place of the majority of the cancelled shows, an ‘Ozzy & Friends’ gathering (including Geezer Butler, Zakk Wylde, Slash, and other, as-yet-unnanounced special guests) will fill in Black Sabbath’s place. Download Festival have announced a veritable swathe of additional acts that will be gracing their festival at Donington Park this Summer. There’s even a fair few heavyweights in this announcement, including Megadeth, Zakk Wylde’s Black Label Society, Slash, and Thrash Hits’ personal favourite purveyors of intellectual metal, Five Finger Death Punch.

We went to see Black Label Society at Hammersmith Apollo last month and Jesus H Hetfield, our ears are still ringing. While we were there we just had to ask Godsized on how an unsigned metal band from Croydon, with only two EPs to their name, gets to support Black Label Society on the entire European leg of the Berzurkus 2011 Tour.

Live & Photos: Black Label Society + Godsized @ London Hammersmith Apollo – 21 February 2011

March 1st, 2011

Zakk Wylde could easily be the most metal guitarist of all time. Last time he played Wembley Arena with Ozzy he was the support and the headliner. He even had his own half hour solo in the middle of the latter set and was on stage for pretty much three hours straight. That’s pretty metal. So we thought we’d head down to Hammersmith Apollo and try counting the number of pinched harmonics the mountain man had to offer in one night. We lost count before the first song had finished…

Live: Ozzy Osbourne @ London Roundhouse, Saturday 03 July 2010

July 12th, 2010

With Ozzy Osbourne bringing his new six-stringer to London for the first time, it made sense for use to send our residient guitar geek, Amit Sharma, to see if Gus G is up to the task of replacing Zakk Wylde.

With Ozzy Osbourne’s newest effort, Scream, hailed as one of his best in recent years, or at least as a step back towards a harder rock edge, tickets for this mini-tour of smallish venues went pretty quick. Zakk or no Zakk, this tour would be the perfect opportunity to catch the Prince of Fucking Darkness in an intimate setting. What made tonight even sweeter was that it was part of this year’s iTunes Festival, therefore free if you won a ticket.

It’s unlikely to have escaped the attention of even passing fans of heavy music that that Ozzy Osbourne changed guitarists a few months ago. After his split with Zakk Wylde and the appointment of Firewind’s wizard of widdle, Gus G, there were a few eyebrows raised. Would a practitioner of power metal – however accomplished – fit in with the Prince Of Fucking Darkness’ style? Scream, the first album to feature the new line-up, does not answer this question.
